English Composition 1

This is an introduction to the logic and structure of the English language with special emphasis upon reading development and the application of language skills to reading comprehension and the art of composition. Students participate four-five hours per week in group, laboratory, and tutorial sessions by arrangement.

History of Christianity

Prerequisites: none
This is an overview of the Bible intended to acquaint the student with its background, content and messages as superior Christian literature. The student is expected to read specified sections of the Old and New Testaments and become acquainted with their message.

Introduction to Business

It is an introductory level course to the business environment in which we live and work. The course reviews the cultural, social, political, and economic factors that shape business institutions.

Sociology

An introduction to the study of social groups and social relationships. The course analyzes basic sociological concepts to acquaint the student with the fundamental laws governing human relationships. Problems of social structure, social processes and social motivation will be considered.

Business English

Presents business-related vocabulary, practice in note-taking skills, preparing presentations. Introduces terminology and techniques used in commercial transactions, including interpretation and writing of business materials. “Emphasis on correct, effective and concise use of the language, both oral and written. Study of letters and documents used in legal, governmental and business transactions.

Mathematics 1

Presents concentrated and more detailed study of algebra, trigonometry and introduction to analytic geometry.

English Composition 2

Prerequisites: BL 100 (English Composition 1)
The development of techniques for effective writing through a study of the writing process and of the skills necessary for producing purposeful, unified, and coherent short essays: rhetoric, logical thought, audience, critical thinking, introduction to research. Readings include expository prose and short fiction.

Covers the political and social history of the United States and the development of its economic system.

Principles of Marketing

Presents an analysis of marketing problems and techniques relating to management and marketing in the profitable operation of a business enterprise. Attention is given to evaluating consumers, needs, product strategy, distribution strategy, promotional strategy, and price determination.

Principles of Management

Introduces the principles and functions of management with an integration of line and staff relationships, theories of management, authority and responsibility, centralization and decentralization, planning, organizing, directing, and controlling.

Business Communication

Considers the process of oral communication and the fundamentals of speech with primary emphasis on composition, delivery and the roles of public address.

Mathematics 2

Prerequisites: MC 100 (Mathematics 1)
Studies problems of solving structure and properties of the real number systems, number theory, principles of descriptive and inferential statistics, probability and geometry topics. Emphasis is on application to real life situations.

Accounting Principles 1

Prerequisites: MC 100 (Mathematics 1)
Presents comprehensive instruction in the basic accounting practices, with the emphasis on mercantile and personal service enterprises. The course deals with both the bookkeeping process and the presentation and use of accounting data in the management of a business enterprise.

English Composition 3

Prerequisites: BL 100 (English Composition 1), BL 110 (English   Composition
Reviews students’ grasp of short essay structure and of effective sentence structure, but emphasizes argument, persuasion, and research writing. Essays are longer and more complex. The readings, which include expository essays plus several longer works of fiction or drama or a selection of poems, will serve to unify the course content.

American Literature

Surveys selected American classics from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Introduction to Computer Science

Prerequisites: none
Provides an overview of how the computer works and its functional relationship to society. Examines hardware and software, terminology, and foundational Computer Science concepts. Students will learn to use a microcomputer by executing various software application programs.

Macroeconomics

(3) EC 200 Prerequisites: MC 100 (Mathematics 1)
Presents principles and theories of macroeconomics with emphasis on economic analysis and special application to the international trade market and to management economics.

Accounting Principles 2

(3) AF 210 Prerequisites: AF 200 (Accounting Principles 1)
Emphasizes accounting as a practical and useful tool of control for business management. The fundamental bookkeeping process is presented from the background of a simple balance sheet equation. A logical development and unfolding of the subject then follows the profit and loss statement, the ledger, the special journal, scientific account classification and control mechanisms of various types.

Speech Communication

(3) BL 210 Prerequisites: BL 110 (English Composition II)
Considers the process of oral communication and the fundamentals of speech with application of these fundamentals in selected speech projects.

Statistics

(3) MC 220
Prerequisites: MC 100 (Mathematics 1), MC 110 (Mathematics 2) Studies the basic methods of sampling and interpreting data, probability, the normal distribution, correlation, hypothesis testing and confidence intervals.

Software Application

(3) MC 210
Prerequisites: MC 200 (Introduction to Computer Science) Allows the student to develop expertise in using software application packages to solve personal and professional problems. The computer as a toll is emphasized by the in-depth study of word processing, electronic spreadsheets, and data management systems. In addition, graphics, communications, integrated packages, and operating systems from the user’s point of view are examined. Students carry out projects using each category of application package.

Microeconomics

Presents a study of the fundamental economic principles and theories with emphasis on microeconomics and special application to the organization of different national economic systems in the performance of their tasks of production, exchange and distribution of consumer and capital goods and services.

German 1

Emphasizes study of German grammar with aim of mastering all grammatical forms; development of speaking ability, reading and interpretation of simple texts; introduction to all basic grammatical structures; intensive drill in written and conversational skills; systematic discussion of selected grammatical difficulties; intermediate composition; expansion of conversational and writing skills through discussion and written exercises; development of oral proficiency.

Psychology

An introduction survey course acquainting the student with the procedures, principles, theories and vocabulary of psychology as a science with an emphasis on personality development, individual and mental health.

Principles of Finance

Prerequisites: AF 210 (Accounting II)
Examines the role of financial management with emphasis on multinational corporations. Studies principles and practice of financing; sources and control of funds, financial instruments, capital market analysis. Some major topics are state budget, state revenue, tax system, regional finance, insurance, interest rates, stock and bond values, financial strategies.

Environmental Science

Prerequisites: none
Has as its objective the raising of the awareness of environmental concerns that are facing today’s world and its modern industrial production. Students will be introduced to the work and guiding principles of international agencies and institutions of environmental protection, to various standards set by these institutions, and to mechanisms of enforcement of these standards. The course also focuses on the situation of environment in Eastern Europe and discusses various governmental programs that exist for preserving the nature for future generations.

Economics of Ukraine

Covers main development tendencies in Ukrainian economy and ways of its transformation. Studies the scientific and technical potential of the country: its preservation, development and integration in the global economy. Examines insurance policy, the problem of national resources and foreign investment, Ukraine’s cooperation with other countries of the world.

German 2

Emphasizes oral business communication. The language of businessmen and professionals in the field of management and marketing. Written business communication. The making-out of business documents, speeches, reports, telephone communication, technical and literary translation from (into) Ukrainian. The syntax of written communication. Professional dialogues and monologues. The writing of scientific and technical reports and publications for foreign partners.

International Business Law

Covers the subject of contracts, agency, sales, negotiable instruments, partnerships, and corporations by a study of court decisions. Practical examples are cited by the instructors who are active practitioners in the field of law.

Studies and trains business rules of behavior. Ethics of presentation, invitation, negotiations in different types of organizations.

Human Resource Management

Studies ideology and problems of manpower planning and management, criteria for selection, appraisal of performance, industrial relations and collective bargaining.

European Economics

Examines main economic models of the Western European countries.
Studies tendencies, proportions of their current economic development. Looks into the countries of Eastern Europe, their economic and social policy.

Interpersonal Communication

Interdisciplinary study designed to improve the student’s understanding of and skills in intra- and interpersonal communication. Emphasis will be placed on contributions from the field of psychology, sociology, and general semantics.

Introduces students to Western philosophical thought through a study of its historical development. The student also studies primary sources. A special unit on aesthetics involves some off-campus experiences.

A course concerned with the challenges, problems and opportunities that face corporations operating outside their domestic environment. The emphasis is made on the basic principles, concepts and techniques relevant to international business management.

Surveys major contemporary religions in terms of worship, beliefs, values, and history.

International Economics

Studies principle international economic institutions since World War II. Interaction between government policies and the IMF, IBRD, regional banks, GATT, EEC and other institutions are examined. The course covers international payments and their mechanisms, systems for determining and influencing exchange rates and the role of international investment and multinational corporations.

An examination of financial concepts and tools of analysis as they apply to the management of domestic and international operations. This course is taught from the point of view of a firm engaged in international business.

Organizational Behavior

Studies the factors, which influence the behavior of the individual and the group. It also examines changes and development of each, which lead to achieving the goals of both. Necessity of understanding the need for behavior within organization that enhances success in a dynamic environment.

Business Policy

Prerequisites: AF 210 (Accounting Principles II), AF 300 (Principles of Finance)
Concentrates on analyzing, synthesizing, evaluating, and communicating ethical action plans in a variety of business situations. Business Policy requires a knowledge of all business functional areas for broad involvement in the management decision making process.
